It is not certain, but is suggested that Lovecraft created the name Miskatonic from words from the Algonquian languages. Place-names based on the Algonquian languages are common throughout New England. In this case likely derivations come from the "Misqat", a tribe descended from the Native Americans of Massachusetts and the "Housatonic River" which winds from the Long Island Sound through the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts and Connecticut.
