There’s a War in the Shadows…
The world of Contagion is a dark and terrifying place. On the surface it is no different than the world you and I live in. Most people go on about their lives never realizing the terrors that walk among them.
Despite humanity’s vast ignorance, the horrors are there. Angels and demons make war in the shadows. Hellspawn serve their demonic masters. Clergy and Slayers rise from the human flock to protect their brethren and work God’s will. There’s a war in the shadows. Choose a side.
Contagion is a modern horror/ urban fantasy game that saw the light of day back in 2004. Using the Open Game License system, Travis Legge and his partners at Aegis Studios created a world of wonder and horror in which players could make fantastic characters and tell unique stories of very dark adventure.
Originally Contagion made use of the OGL system, in part due to its massive popularity, but also because it was a well developed, tried and tested system that allowed Travisand his partners Darius McCaskkey and Toy Cesar to focus on the vision that they had for the Contagion setting, as you would expect this meant a few tweaks, but anyone who has played the game will know that they left the core rules of the OGL system largely intact.
Now, and through an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds, Travis and his colleagues are revisiting the core rules of the Contagion roleplaying game with a view to creating a new, better edition. Over the last ten years, they have put together literally thousands of pages worth of supplemental material for Contagion.
As Travis says “When I created Contagion I crafted a world and made it conform to a game system. With Contagion Second Edition I intend to rebuild the game system to better reflect the world of Contagion“. As anyone involved in game design knows, when you do that you inevitably compromise a little of your vision and I am excited by the idea that Contagion 2nd Edition may be even more true to its authors original concept.
Update:The indiegogo campaign funded successfully and the book was subsequently published – I for one have enjoyed playing it and can happily recommend it to anyone looking for a game of modern, urban fantasy horror.
Anyone new to the world of contagion may want to check out the Contagion material at DriveThruRPG, I can’t recommend enough the Contagion Classic Bundle, which whilst a first edition Contagion product contains so much material and which gives you pretty much everything you could possibly want… until you get your hands on the 2nd Edition of course. Check out the bundle here at DriveThruRPG.
