A while back we started posting links to RPG Kickstarters that we particularly like. Lately we have been a bit remiss, we didn’t even mention the 7th Edition Call Of Cthulhu rules, (which reached its funding targets in almost record time), so the time has come to put things right and draw your attention to one of the most satisfying Kickstarters for a while…
A re-release of what was probably the first Steampunk RPG, back in all its Victorian glory with new artwork, more background material and, new rules! Space 1889.
Getting on for 25 years ago, game designer and author Frank Chadwick came up with the idea of a roleplaying game set in a world inspired by the fantastic novels of early Science Fiction authors like Jules Verne or H. G. Wells.
Space: 1889 was first published in 1988 by Game Designers Workshop (GDW). GDW were responsible for some really great games (including Traveller, Twilight 2000, 2300AD and En Garde!). GDW ceased to be in 1996 but, the fan-base for their games and in particular Space 1889 has continued and with the growing popularity of ‘steampunk culture’ it is no surprise that now is seen as a great time to bring back this “roleplaying game in a more civilized time”.
Uhrwerk Verlag (english website: www.clockwork-publishing.com) is one of the larger RPG publishers in Germany. They produce a wide range of RPGs including German versions of “The One Ring,” “Hollow Earth Expedition,” and “Deadlands Classic.” In the summer of 2012, Uhrwerk Verlag published a brand new German version of Space 1889, with the Kickstarter they are looking to bring the game back to a wider audience.
This Space: 1889 Kickstarter is a cooperation between Uhrwerk Verlag/Clockwork Publishing, Chronicle City, and Frank Chadwick.
